Statement of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Alberta Provincial Council regarding UCP candidates in the upcoming provincial election, Eric Bouchard and Chelsea Petrovic.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council is grateful to all Albertans for their strong support of Ukraine, particularly since Russia launched its full-scale invasion and genocidal war against Ukraine in February 2022.
The UCC APC was appalled to learn of the anti-Ukrainian sentiment and “ZelenskyWarCriminal” hashtag retweeted by UCP candidate for Calgary Lougheed, Eric Bouchard, and the online statements that have been attributed in recent media reports to the husband of UCP candidate for the riding of Livingstone-Macleod, Chelsea Petrovic, in support of war criminal Vladimir Putin.
The UCC APC understands that the views of candidate Bouchard and the spouse of candidate Petrovic are contrary to the position of the United Conservative Party.
In an answer to the UCC APC’s election survey, the United Conservative Party’s Tyler Shandro stated, “Our province and our country must support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity unconditionally and no one from the West should ask Ukraine to concede any territory in a peace agreement. That includes Crimea.”
We urge UCP Leader Smith and the UCP to disavow and condemn, the anti-Ukrainian statements made by candidate Bouchard and the spouse of candidate Petrovic and urge the candidates to retract and apologize for their hurtful remarks.
