“Honourary Ukrainian” served as election observer, UNF Treasurer
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Bell at the age of 81 years.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Luba; son, Mike (Mychaylyk); sister-in-law, Lesia; family in Canada, England, Australia and Ukraine; and numerous dear friends. Predeceased by his parents Walter and Gladys, and relatives in England and Australia.
Michael was born in Rustington, England. He was very proud to be Head Boy at Worthing School; he loved rugby and as a young man played for the Harlequins. He loved to travel, and with his family visited many countries. Puerto Vallarta had a special place in his heart.
Michael's professional career started as an actuary in London. In 1967 he was recruited by CIBC for their IT department, leading to a career in computers. Following CIBC, he worked for the Government of Alberta and ICBC in Vancouver before entering the private sector.
Michael greatly supported the Ukrainian community in Edmonton. So much so, he was considered an ‘Honourary Ukrainian'. He travelled to Ukraine four times as an International Observer for Presidential elections. He was Treasurer of UNF and UCC-APC and on the audit committee of UMSA. Michael was also Treasurer of the Royal Over-Seas League Edmonton Branch.
Michael was a thoughtful, kind and generous person. He loved people and people loved him. He was easy to talk to and had a lovely sense of humour. Michael enjoyed reading, walking the dog and watching Luba garden. He loved the Arts and was a sports enthusiast. Together with Luba, he loved to entertain family and friends. Michael loved life and lived it to the fullest. Michael will be dearly missed.
