The Department of History of the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” announces the beginning of the Eugene Olefirenko Nominated Charitable Fund.

The International Charity Foundation for the revival of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is raising funds for the “Memorial Scholarship named after Eugene Olefírenko” to cover tuition for a student who will enter the University’s master’s program “History”.

Olefírenko was the son of Oksana Shevchenko, stepson of the late Vitaliy Shevchenko and stepbrother of Andriy Shevchenko, former Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada.

The Foundation was launched by the Department of History together with the family and friends of Eugene. They want to perpetuate the memory of Eugene Olefírenko – the Univesity’s former student, graduate of the 2010 Bachelor’s Program in History: inventive, fun and always principled.

Until February 24, 2022, Eugene worked as a manager in the hotel business. After the start of a full-scale invasion, he mobilized to the 206th Kyiv Territorial Defense Battalion, and ended his battle journey as the commander of the First Ivan Bohun Separate Special Purpose Brigade. During this time, Eugene fought near Mykolaiv, was a grenade launcher and a mortar operator, taught foreign volunteers. His unit defended Lysychansk in the Luhansk region to the last minute. He managed to get his platoon out of the semi-surrounded town unharmed. Eugene Olefirenko was killed near Bakhmut on July 7, 2022.
