People with osteoarthritis have damage to their joints. This leads to pain and decreased ability to move. Rates of osteoarthritis increase as we get older, affecting half of individuals over the age of 70. It is not the same as rheumatoid arthritis, which is caused by autoimmune processes leading to swelling and tenderness of the joints. These two diseases are managed with different drugs.

Frequently osteoarthritis is treated with Tylenol for the pain and exercise to strengthen muscles. Additionally, multiple natural options are available.

If only one or two joints are affected, a cream can provide targeted relief. This is especially effective if the hands or knees are involved. Creams containing capsaicin, an ingredient found in hot peppers, may reduce the pain by half in 4 weeks. It is one of the ingredients found in Lakota rubs. Similarly, arnica gel applied to the joints can reduce discomfort.

Some of the most effective natural products available as pills for osteoarthritis are SAMe, glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric. They help to decrease soreness and improve the ability to move. SAMe is used by the human body for metabolism and to build necessary components. Glucosamine has shown benefit, especially with knee osteoarthritis. Chondroitin naturally occurs in cartilage of joints and taking it long term may help to slow down progression of the disease. Turmeric is a spice that has been especially formulated to improve joint function and it is sold under brands such as Curcumin Active. There are numerous different herbal and natural medicines that can be taken for osteoarthritis.

Finally, a word of caution, before starting any medication it can be beneficial to speak to a pharmacist or a doctor. Although herbal medicines come from nature they can still interact with other medications, such as blood thinners, antidepressants or those used to treat Parkinson’s.

Остеоартроз характеризується пошкодженням суглобів в результаті травм або зношення. Цe приводить до болі та обмеження руху. З віком імовірність захворювання збільшується і після 70 років половина людей страждає на це захворювання. Остеоартроз відрізняється від інших артрозів. Незважаючи на те, що рослинні препарати надходять з природи, вони можуть бути несумісними з багатьма ліками, зокрема з тими, що розріджують кров, антидепресантами і медикаментами від захворювання Паркiнсона.
