On June 23, 2018, the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF) held a meeting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, site of a receiving station where over 100 years ago hundreds of so-called “enemy aliens” were detained during Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914 to 1920.
The Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund met to review applications and grant funding to variety of new initiatives intended to recognize and commemorate the experiences of the 8,579 “enemy aliens” (including, among others, Ukrainians, Croats, Poles, Bulgarians, Romanians, Serbians, and various people from the Ottoman Empire), who were interned in 24 receiving stations and camps across Canada from 1914-1920, including a receiving station in Winnipeg.
For a full report on the projects funded by the CFWWIRF Endowment Council look for the upcoming 2018 Annual Report on the CFWWIRF website in August.
The Endowment Council includes representatives from the Ukrainian, Romanian, Bulgarian and Serbian communities and an internee descendant.
