On the occasion of Canada's 150th birthday, a celebration of our nation's diversity and the legacy of multiculturalism in Canada was hosted by the Canadian Ethnocultural Council in collaboration with the Canadian Ethnic Media Association at a gala dinner and awards ceremony titled “Together in Canada”.
It was held Saturday, June 24th at the Riviera Event and Convention Centre in Vaughan, Ontario, and featured representatives from multiple ethnic groups and organizations, retired and current political figures, and other dignitaries.
The focus of the program was the presentation of the CEC Award for Multiculturalism. This award recognizes outstanding Canadians who have significantly contributed to diversity. The highlight of the evening was the award presented posthumously to the father of multiculturalism, the late Senator Paul Yuzyk, whose pioneering policy initiatives continue to make Canada the destination of choice for newcomers from all over the world. His daughter, Vicki Karpiak received the award in his honour and gave a moving speech in tribute to her father's foundational work.
In addition, the youngest award recipient was Stefan Luczkiw, National President of the Ukrainian National Youth Federation of Canada (UNYF) and an enthusiastic youth leader in the Ukrainian community. It was especially significant that Stefan received this award as well, since the late Senator Yuzyk was a leading member of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada (the parent organization of the UNYF) for many decades.
