On May 26, 2016 the Ukrainian Credit Union awarded scholarships to eight deserving students for high academics and great dedication to the community.

Five students received UCU’s Сommunity Leadership Scholarship worth $1,000 each: Elizabeth Zienchuk (Toronto), Maksym Lysyk (Oshawa), Chrystyna Levytska (Toronto), Maria Kvitlana Tsap (Mississauga), and Michael Fik (Mississauga). These young people displayed high achievements in their field of studies and leadership among peers.
Aside from the community leadership awards, UCU’s Scholarship Committee presented the UCU Vasyl Sytnyk memorial scholarship in the amount of $2,500 and The UCU Michael Rebryk Memorial Scholarship also in the amount of $2,500. Both scholarships were presented to candidates, who demonstrated leadership and community involvement, above average academic performance and are studying in a field that will lead to a career within business and finance sector or arts and athletics, correspondingly. The recipients were Nestor Masley of Mississauga, currently studying Economics at Harvard University and Inga Bekbudova of Toronto, currently studying Performance Production at Ryerson University.

This year, UCU established a new scholarship – the Ukrainian Credit Union Limited Eugene Roman scholarship in the sum of $2,000, which honours Mr. Eugene Roman, past Director and Chair of the UCU Board of Directors. It is awarded to a candidate of a Ukrainian heritage who studies in a field leading to a career in a technology sector. The first recipient of the scholarship is Roman Protsyk, who is studying Computational and Theoretical Physics at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

In his speech, Eugene Roman congratulated the youth on their academic performance and achievements. He pointed out that scholarships encourage students to make a difference in the community: “It will help you, but it will only help you if you think about how you help others,” said Mr. Roman. Eugene Roman also pointed out that Ukrainian Credit Union has always been about helping and supporting Ukrainian youth and inviting young people to greater participation in the community. It has served Ontarians for many years since 1944 and continues to bring Ukrainians together.

Mr. Roman expressed sincere hope that UCU Scholarships recipients will develop a tighter relationship with the Credit Union, one that revolves not only around scholarships: “We don’t put any obligations on you but we ask you to be part of the community. If you think about what makes the team special, and I think all the scholarship recipients should, – you are now in a special relationship. Come visit us, spend time with us. What we ask of you is to think about making a difference in the community because the community is making a difference in your life tonight. A piece of advice that I can give you is if you don’t have a mentor and you’re a student – go find one. The UCU is about giving back and if you make a difference in people’s lives, you will be happier, healthier and you will be more special than you are tonight,” said Eugene Roman.
