Representatives of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council met with Edmonton New Democratic Party Members of Parliament to discuss issues of importance to the Ukrainian community.

The delegation which met with Strathcona MP Heather McPherson and Griesbach MP Blake Desjarlais included Orysia Boychuk, President, UCC-APC; Lydia Migus, Vice President UCC-APC, Liliya Sokha, Director, UCC-APC; and University of Calgary Professor Emeritus Bohdan Harasymiw.

The delegation told MPs they want the government to take a proactive role in anticipation of a massive refugee crisis should a further Russian invasion of Ukraine take place with a focus on family reunification and support for humanitarian aid. There are already 1.5 million people who have been displaced by the ongoing eight-year war in Ukraine.

The MPs responded that they were committed in bringing this issue forward.

The delegation also asked MPs what can be done about Russia Today, which spreads hatred but is broadcast on cable networks throughout Canada.

They were told the NDP hopes to address this with the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Canadian Heritage Committee of Parliament.
