New Pathway – Ukrainian News.

The New Pathway Ukrainian News held its Meeting of Shareholders on August 15 in Toronto ON. At the meeting, NP-UN’s Head of the Board Slawko Borys said that NP-UN’s vision remains the same – the newspaper strives to be Canada’s window to the Ukrainian-Canadian Community and the voice of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada. NP-UN also considers its mission to inform Ukrainian Canadians and provide them access to their community from coast to coast to coast. Over the past year, this mission has been facilitated by the New Pathway’s merger with Edmonton-based Ukrainian News. Now, the new paper covers practically all Canadian regions where Ukrainian Canadians reside. Among NP-UN’s goals is to become the information source of choice for the Ukrainian Community about the whole spectrum of community- and Ukraine-related issues.

Over the past 12 months since the merger, the NP-UN has made considerable progress to achieve these goals. Its content has become even more comprehensive and deep while the paper has received a new appealing look with new logo and masthead. At the Meeting, several speakers noted significant efforts that the NP-UN’s staff both in Toronto and Edmonton applied to make the merger a success and develop the new paper. Substantial contribution by the Board and its particular members into the whole range of issues, which the NP-UN has faced over the past period, from legal to technical to editorial, has also been noted.

The NP-UN is looking to make further progress to meet its goal of becoming an information and community outlet which combines the printed newspaper and online portal/resource. It has started redeveloping the www.newpathway.ca website with the objective of making it more comprehensive and interactive. Since August, the new online Event Calendar for the community is available at the web-site where members of the community can add their events. The immediate plan is to enhance the Job Posting section and develop an online Business Directory for the community.

At the meeting, the new Board of Directors was elected with Walter Kish of Oshawa becoming its new Chair. Mr. Kish has a long history with the New Pathway going back to the 1970’s when he created the first monthly English section for the paper. He also was Chair of the Board from 1999-2003. At that time, the newspaper had been in decline for some time and was in serious financial difficulty. He initiated a complete revamping of the paper’s design, style and content, which succeeded in bringing new life, purpose and financial stability to the paper, which has continued to the present day.

The Meeting also elected the following new members of the Board: Vice Chair – Bohdan Romaniuk (Calgary); Secretary – Roman Kravec (Edmonton); Yuriy Diakunchak (Toronto); Juri Klufas (Toronto); Cassian Soltykevych (Ottawa); Darka Tarnawsky (Edmonton); and Ivan Lypovyk (Edmonton).
