UNF Toronto Camp Sokil Golf Tournament

Sep 19, 2018 | Ukrainian National Federation, Featured

Dianna Fedun, UWO-Toronto.

In the late 1950’s a group of Ukrainian National Federation Toronto members and some friends would meet up at Shanty Bay Golf Course in Oro Medonte. This Saturday ritual would begin in the late spring and end when the cottages closed for the season. These were not great golfers, but this was the ‘boardroom’ where ideas developed. These men were very active and participated in the growth of what is now Camp Sokil – Hawkestone.

The children’s camp was built in 1959 and ran for 6 weeks during the summer. Girls had the first 3 weeks then the boys the second half. The following year it was reversed. Camp was successful and was full. However, on a yearly basis, renovations and repairs were always needed to be done. As well, new equipment for the camp was bought to keep the camp current.

The golfers continued to meet Saturday mornings at their Shanty Bay boardroom. Slowly this very small group of men began to grow. By the mid 70’s the first UNF Children’s Camp Golf Tournament was held. Proceeds from the tournament went back into supporting and improving the Children’s Camp.

The annual UNF Toronto – Camp Sokil Golf Tournament has continued to this date. Unfortunately, many of the original golfers have passed. We honour four with their names on Memorial Trophies.

This year’s tournament brought out 74 golfers. Of these 11 were students and we had the most female golfers since the inaugural golf tournament. As well, many new faces attended which we hope to see again next year.

Trophy winners for 2018 are as follows: “Nadia Uhryn Memorial Trophy” was presented to Trisha Radley, top female scorer; “Paul Fedun Memorial Trophy – golfers under 25 years of age” was presented to Adam Shar; “Joe Chaszcziwskiy Memorial Trophy, 25 to 49 years of age” was presented to Stephan Masney; “Mike Rebryk Memorial Trophy, over 50 years of age” was presented to Dmytro Badiwsky. Congratulation to all.

The current golf committee has been organizing the tournament for 6 years now. We decided 3 years ago and with the approval of UNF Toronto Executive to fundraise specifically for a new children’s playground. Then several years ago the UNF Toronto Malanka committee joined us in allocating their proceeds towards the playground.
ABC Recreation is the company chosen and a structure designed. It is anticipated the playground will be installed during the 2019 season.

This project could not have come to fruition without the support of all the Corporate Sponsors, Hole Sponsors, the golfers, family and friends attending.

At this year’s dinner Appreciation Awards were given out to our Corporate Sponsors who have supported this tournament and Camp Sokil for many years. Also, Luba & Taras Chemij – Blue Goose Tavern generously donated $5,000 towards the playground in memory of the late and dear friend Nick Sztefan. A plaque with the names of donors (over $1000) will be displayed by the playground. For a tax receipt, donations can be made to UNF Foundation 145 Evans Ave. Toronto and in the memo please write Camp Sokil playground.

In 2019, the UNF’s Children’s Camp Sokil will be celebrating 60 years! UNF Toronto will also be celebrating their 85th Anniversary. Plans are underway to celebrate both events during Ivana Kupalo in July 2019!

UNF Toronto & Camp Sokil Golf Tournament Committee would like to acknowledge all the golfers who attended this year’s tournament. As well, a special thank you to all our Corporate, Grab Bag, Hole Sponsorship, Raffle, Monetary and In-kind donors. Please support their businesses.
