On November 12, 2024, the Ukrainian Canadian Bar Association (UCBA) hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the prestigious University Club of Toronto. This significant event gathered legal community members and featured prominent figures who contributed to an engaging and informative session.
The event commenced with attendees gathering for registration. The Honourable Arif Virani, P.C., M.P., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, was an anticipated distinguished guest and participated in the chat, contributing his perspectives and expertise. Minister Virani, a former Assistant Trial Attorney who prosecuted genocide at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, shared compelling insights about international legal frameworks and the prosecution of war crimes. Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, this topic resonates deeply with the Ukrainian Canadian community.

Following this enlightening session, attendees shifted their focus to the AGM proceedings. The meeting was called to order with a formal acknowledgment of the traditional Indigenous territory, a moment of silence in honour of Remembrance Day, and a heartfelt expression of solidarity with Ukraine through the words, “Ми з Україною” (“We are with Ukraine”).
Essential items on the agenda included approving the previous year’s AGM minutes, reports from the Vice President and Treasurer, and the election of new directors. The UCBA took this opportunity to highlight its achievements over the past year and solidify plans for future endeavours. Reports presented detailed the association's financial health, with the Treasurer confirming sound financial management. Members also discussed ongoing initiatives to strengthen the UCBA's mission to support the Ukrainian Canadian legal community.
The election segment welcomed returning and new directors, ensuring a dynamic and experienced leadership team for the coming term. Notable returning directors included Taras Kulish, Andy Balaura, and Andriana Ozymtchak, among others. At the same time, new additions such as Elena Kaminsky and Michael P. Mychailyshyn brought fresh perspectives from their respective legal fields.
The AGM concluded with the recognition of significant contributions. Alexandra Chyczij, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, was honoured as the Ukrainian Canadian Lawyer of the Year, reflecting her dedication to promoting justice and Ukrainian causes in Canada. Minister Arif Virani was also recognized as Canadian Lawyer of the Year, highlighting his commitment to legal excellence and justice.
The evening ended on a high note with a networking reception sponsored by distinguished law firms, including Dickinson Wright, Mills & Mills LLP, Pallett Valo LLP, and Fasken.
