UNF Ottawa-Gatineau together with the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) held in Ottawa, on May 29th, 2015, a very successful fundraising outreach event which raised $42,135.00

Since the beginning of the conflict in Crimea and later in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, more than one million Ukrainians were forced to leave their towns and villages looking for refuge in other regions of Ukraine or in other countries. These displaced families have been struggling on a daily basis to meet their basic needs for food and shelter. The UN estimates that about 3.2 million Ukrainians will need humanitarian assistance in order to survive. For these basic needs $360 million dollars are urgently needed in 2015. To date only 25% of this amount has been secured.

To provide relief to the displaced by war, UNF Ottawa-Gatineau joined forces with CNEWA that has been assisting Ukraine since 1991. A breakfast fundraiser was held in Ottawa with over l00 people in attendance. Guests included the Canadian Government officials, the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Ukraine and many community leaders. The Sponsors were the Ukrainian Credit Union with Taras Pidzamecky in attendance and the Knights of Columbus, St. Vladimir the Great Council # 9557. Father Peter Galadza, Director of the Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, was the entertaining and effective Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The main guest speaker was Dr. Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador for Religious Freedom. In his presentation, Ambassador Bennett shared his insights on the importance of religious freedom in the global context and provided detailed analysis of the challenges faced by religious minorities on territories that have been recently seized by pro-Russian militants and Russian military forces. The keynote speaker praised CNEWA’s valuable role in peacebuilding and defense of religious freedom in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Other speakers included, Mr. Jim Eglinski, MP from Alberta who spoke on behalf of the Government of Canada and the Hon. Paul Dewar, on behalf of the Leader of the Official Opposition. Mr. Carl Hetu, CNEWA Canada’s National Director, addressed the audience elaborating on how the raised funds would be used to provide shelter, water, food, clothing and medical supplies to the internally displaced people via regional support centers of Caritas Ukraine, CNEWA’s long-time partner in Ukraine.

May we take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors, committee members and all individuals who donated generously their time and money to make this important fundraiser for Ukraine a success!
