The Presentation was made on November 8, 2015, in the Ukrainian Canadian Memorial Park on Scarlett Rd. in Toronto, ON

2015 is a unique year for anniversaries of significant military events and sacrifices of soldiers.

In April of 1915, soldiers of the 1st Canadian Division fought at the Second Battle of Ypres. Following an intensive artillery bombardment, the Germans released 160 tons of chlorine gas from cylinders dug into their trenches. This was the first use of chlorine gas in the war. As thick clouds of yellow-green chlorine drifted over their trenches, the French and British forces on either side of the Canadians crumbled. The Canadians were the only division that were able to hold the line. A few days later, the Germans launched another poison gas attack, this time at the Canadian line. In those 48 hours of battle, the Canadians suffered over 6,000 casualties, one man in every three, of whom more than 2,000 died. Some of those that were killed in action were of Ukrainian background. Private Wasyl Kalabza and Gunner Fedir Popow are buried at the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial in Belgium. These Ukrainian Canadians were some of the 10,000 that served in WWI. This year, the Ukrainian Collectibles Society in Toronto is issuing a Canada Post stamp recognizing contributions of the Ukrainian Canadians to military service in Canada.

Meanwhile on the Eastern Front, at precisely the same time, the UCC, Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, distinguished themselves in the battle of Makivka.

Thirty years later, in April 1945, Canadian troops liberated most of the Netherlands. By the time German forces on the British and Canadian front surrendered on 5 May, the Canadians had advanced into northern Germany. At 02:41 on the morning of 7 May 1945, the German Chief-of-Staff General Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender documents for all German forces to the Allies. The next day shortly before midnight, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel repeated the signing in Berlin at Soviet General Zhukov's headquarters. The war in Europe was over.

By the end of the Second World War, 19% of Ukraine’s population or 8 million people were killed. Ukraine suffered more death and carnage in World War 2 than any other European country.

Today, we continue to witness the occupation of Ukraine by Russia.

We have watched the erosion of the rights of the Crimean Tatars and increased violence against them with the Russian occupation of Crimea.

Today, Canadian Armed Forces have deployed personnel in Central and Eastern Europe as part of NATO assurance measures. This past summer Canadian troops deployed to Ukraine under Operation UNIFIER to help train Ukrainian forces.

In Iraq and Syria, we have witnessed the violent and grotesque onslaught of ISIS with its complete disregard for life and any norms of civil behaviour. Canadian and coalition forces continue to degrade ISIS.

This past summer, my family visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and observed the changing of the guard. At the entrance of the Tomb Guard Quarters, the “The Sentinel’s Creed” is posted. It states:

“My dedication to this sacred duty is total and wholehearted. In the responsibility bestowed on me never will I falter. I will walk my tour in humble reverence to the best of my ability. It is he who commands the respect I protect. His bravery that made us so proud. This soldier will in honoured glory rest under my eternal vigilance”

Let our presence here today and every year be our eternal commitment to our fallen.
