Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Chrystia Freeland, during his visit to Canada September 23.

They discussed ways to fully implement the mutual benefits provided by the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA), as well as further enhancement of bilateral cooperation in the defense sphere, including support for Ukraine in the development of close partnership with NATO.

The parties discussed the situation in Donbas and the implementation of the Minsk agreements. They also discussed coordinated approaches for implementation of the initiative to deploy a UN peacekeeping operation in the occupied territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The parties are hopeful that Canada will remain principled on the issue of sanctions against Moscow, especially in view of its future presidency in the G7.

Poroshenko also noted Canada’s support for the implementation of reforms in Ukraine. In particular, he thanked Freeland for her personal participation in the London conference for reforms in Ukraine in July 2017, in the course of which new Canadian projects of support have been announced.
