Plast Toronto holds Walkathon to Raise Funds for Ukrainian Soldiers

Stephanie Turenko, Toronto

Last Saturday, November 1, 2014, Plastuny young and old gathered at Garnetwood Park on Burnhamthorpe Road to begin their trek to Centennial Park. The walkathon taking place, named “Ходотон: Теплі Ноги до Перемоги” (Walkathon: Warm Feet to Defeat!) was an initiaive thought of by senior scout leaders Tynia Solys and Christine Turenko to raise funds for soldiers fighting on the Eastern Front in Ukraine.
“We know how difficult it is to hike without proper equipment. That is why we as Plastuny are raising money to provide soldiers with appropriate socks and boots” said Ms. Turenko.
Although the day was exceptionally cold, the crowd walked the 4 km together draped in Ukraine’s flag colours of blue and yellow, finishing in at the summit of Centennial Park. For some young Plastuny, it was their first hike ever. The walkathon finished with some treats and hot chocolate served by some Starshy Plastuny volunteers. The event was a great success raising over $2,000. The campaign will continue until December 1st, 2014 when the new socks and boots will be shipped to soldiers in need. Please visit the Plast Domivka, 516 The Kingsway to make a donation to this great cause.
