On March 18, The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced three initiatives to support Ukraine.
The following projects will be funded by the Government of Canada: $1.2 million to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to support the administration and coordination of elections; $3 million to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems to strengthen reform on transparency and anti-corruption in the Ukrainian political process; and $2.9 million to the National Democratic Institute to help Ukrainians practice transparent election financing and promote women’s political empowerment.
According to the explanation provided to the New Pathway by François Lasalle, Media Relations Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, the funding for these projects is in addition to all amounts announced previously by Canada for its support of Ukraine. According to www.international.gc.ca, since January 2014, the Government of Canada has announced more than $568 million in assistance to Ukraine, which includes support for economic stabilization, democracy and human rights, humanitarian assistance and security. This also includes two $200-million low-interest loans to help the Government of Ukraine stabilize its economy.
On the same day, Minister Rob Nicholson announced the delivery to Ukraine of the Canadian shipment, consisting of 60 pairs of night vision goggles which will enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces. The delivery is part of an $11-million assistance package for Ukraine announced in November 2014.
