Letters of Support for the Holodomor Memorial Committee

Mar 8, 2016 | Featured, Newpathway, Community

Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Toronto.

The Holodomor Memorial Project objectives are:
• To erect a memorial to the victims of Holodomor.
• To raise public awareness of the Holodomor genocide.
• To have the unveiling of Memorial within the shortest reasonable time.
• To provide an appropriate public site for Holodomor Commemorations that reflects the activity, importance, and status of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Toronto and the surrounding area.
The process of selecting an appropriate site for the Holodomor Memorial has been in the works for over 20 years. Mayor Tory at the 2015 Ukrainian Bloor Street West Festival –announced that there will be a site provided, on public city lands for the Holodomor Memorial. A number of options were considered and evaluated with the most appropriate location being that at Exhibition Place, inside the Princes’ Gates.
In order to proceed with the application to this site, it is important to show support of this project by our Ukrainian Canadian community of Toronto.
Letter of support can be mailed to:

The Committee has already received several letters. Among them:

Dear Holodomor Project Committee:
I, Tatiana Wanio, a long-time resident and property tax payer in the City of Toronto, support the building of the Holodomor Memorial at Exhibition Place.
Building such a memorial in a public place has been a long time in coming. It is imperative that society, as represented by the City of Toronto, teach Canadian youth about the sanctity of human life.
Such a permanent commemoration will stand to sensitize Torontonians and visitors. The Holodomor is a living lesson about a genocide engineered in peacetime, using food as a weapon against a freedom loving people. By publicly confronting atrocities such as the Holodomor, we create a foundation for a world that does not repeat the past.
We should expect no less in Canada, one of the most progressive countries in the world, and in Toronto, one of the best, most diverse cities in the world.
Sincerely yours,

Tatiana Wanio, Toronto

To: Holodomor Memorial Project Committee
I strongly support your efforts in obtaining a memorial site to the victims of the Stalin orchestrated Holodomor of 1932-1933, in which, it has been estimated, seven to ten million people, men, women, children and the elderly, starved to death in the horrific attempts of the then Soviet Communist regime to crush the patriotic spirit of the Ukrainian population.
The world should know, Canadians and Torontonians should know, and be able to pay tribute to those who perished in this barbaric tragedy, so that not only their voices be heard to prevent such an act of genocide from ever happening again, but to sensitize them as well to the sanctity of human life, and to the continuous acts of aggression that are still being perpetrated on Ukraine, Ukrainians, and Ukrainian soil.
I wish you God's strength in your endeavors.

Respectfully,

Dr George W Foty, Oakville On.
