Euromaidan Canada Report

May 20, 2015 | Newpathway, Community, Featured

EuroMaidan Canada was formed in December 2013 under the leadership of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Toronto Branch, and since that time has been at the forefront of leading community efforts in support of Ukraine by coordinating rallies, pickets, letter writing campaigns, fundraising efforts, and community awareness events.

The initial focus of EuroMaidan Canada was directed at supporting the Ukrainian patriots battling a corrupt Yanukovych regime during the cold winter months of 2013-2014.

In the spring of 2014, EuroMaidan Canada expanded its mandate by supporting the brave soldiers and civilians in Crimea as they faced Putin's army, including providing support to the Tatar TV station ATR which was recently denied a broadcasting license by Russia.

Since the spring of 2014, efforts have been focused on providing defensive and moral support to the brave men and women who are battling Russian terrorists in Eastern Ukraine, particularly those on the very front lines who stand bravely in harm’s way.

The most recent success from EuroMaidan Canada is a joint Prosthetics mission with the Canada-Ukraine Foundation which just wrapped up (see page 6). “When we fitted these young men with their new sophisticated prosthetics they both smiled with joy and cried with gratitude”, said Antonina Kumka.

Media awareness has been a key tool of EuroMaidan Canada. Members of EuroMaidan Canada’s team and the community at large have been terrific in making themselves readily available for over 200 TV, radio, and newspaper interviews to help deliver a clear and concise message across Canada.

There are a number of organizations that work collaboratively with EuroMaidan Canada who deserve special recognition, in particular the following:

• The Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Toronto Branch, for its generous financial support totaling $22,000 to cover all operating costs, including $5,000 assigned for assistance to UCC National for strategic analysis

• The many partners with whom EuroMaidan Canada coordinated events and fundraising activities, including UCC, CUF, UCSS, CCCF, UCU, and BCU, and other credit unions for their cooperation and support

• The Ukrainian media in Canada that has been an important partner in making EuroMaidan events a success, including New Pathway, Homin Ukrainy, Meest Newspaper, Ukrainian News, Kontakt TV, Forum TV, Meest radio, Pisnya Ukrainy, Radio Kontakt

• EuroMaidan Canada continues to work with Ukrainian youth organizations and schools who have provided over 2,500 cards of appreciation in support of the brave defenders of Ukraine

• Additional thanks should be given to Ukrainian National Federation, Toronto Branch, for hosting EuroMaidan meetings since its inception, and to the Shevchenko Ukrainian Cultural Center and Caravan Logistics for logistical support

• Most of all special thanks are due to the thousands of people in Canada who continue to give their time, mail letters, call their MPs, donate funds, and take part in rallies in support of Ukraine. This effort has not gone unnoticed in Ukraine for which EuroMaidan Canada continues to receive letters of gratitude.
EuroMaidan Canada always welcomes all those who wish to assist Ukraine in this effort. If you wish to actively work on projects, please contact the Congress at [email protected]. “Our events are always successful thanks to a very special team of dedicated community activists who together have become a highly effective team”, said Myroslava Khomik, a key EuroMaidan Canada organizer.

Over a million dollars in cash donations and gifts-in-kind have been sent to Ukraine. All funds are managed by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Toronto Branch, with fully-receipted letters of acknowledgement and gratitude from Ukraine, often including pictures and personal stories.

“Our community has done much to help Ukraine, but there is still so much more we can do” said Peter Schturyn, CFO, EuroMaidan Canada.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact the Ukrainian Canadian Congress at 416-323-4772 or make a donation per instructions in the attached chart (see page 9). If you wish to make a donation of $1,000 or more please directly contact Markian Shwec, Chair, EuroMaidan Canada, at [email protected].
