President Darka Morin (Konyk) of the BC Ukrainian Cultural Festival Society (BCUCFS) has announced that the BC Dance and Cultural Festival, scheduled for May 2 in Mission, B.C., has been cancelled.

“Given the gravity of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in consideration of the recommendations of both the B.C. Provincial Health Officer and the B.C. Minister of Health, who have directed that gatherings of more than 250 people be cancelled, we have made a decision to act in compliance with those directives and to cancel our annual festival,” said the society’s president.

The B.C. Festival is the largest cultural gathering of the 200,000-member B.C. Ukrainian-Canadian diaspora. It brings to the Fraser Valley community of Mission a large audience of attendees as well as 300 performers from all corners of the province. A Ukrainian dance troupe from Seattle was also scheduled to attend. This year would have been the 25th annual festival.

“We’ll do it next year on May 8 in Mission,” added Morin (Konyk). “We are now a year ahead in our planning.”
