Canadian Ukrainian Remembrance Day Commemoration Sunday, November 8, 2015

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), Toronto Branch held its annual Remembrance Day parade and ceremony at the Cenotaph located in the in Ukrainian Canadian Memorial Park, Toronto on Sunday, November 8, 2015.  Hundreds in attendance enjoyed the Veteran and Marching Band procession down Scarlett Road, musical interludes with the “Vanguard” Concert Marching Band and piper, the inspiring vocals of the “Orion” Men’s Choir, poignant memorial ceremony and touching words of past veterans.  The afternoon was emceed by Captain (Retd) Andre Sochaniwsky, CD.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The ceremony commemorated the Canadians who sacrificed and contributed to the Canadian Armed Forces and the security of Canada, most recently those serving in Iraq and Central and Eastern Europe supporting NATO and helping train the Ukrainian armed forces. It also paid tribute to the Ukrainian soldiers who have lost their lives or have been injured in the defence of Ukraine.

The memorial service was conducted by both Ukrainian Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic bishops and clergy.  Ceremonial wreaths were laid under the Cenotaph by over 31 representatives from three government levels, Canadian Armed Forces, various veteran groups, and member organizations of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Toronto.  Among them were: MP for Etobicoke Centre, Borys Wrzesnewskyj; the Consul General of Ukraine, Luidmyla Davydovych; the Military Attaché of the Ukrainian Embassy from Ottawa, Colonel Ihor Likarenko; MPP for Etobicoke Centre, Yvan Baker; MPP John Yakabuski from the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party; Councillor John Campbell from the City of Toronto; UCC National President, Paul Grod; UCC-Toronto President, Taras Bahriy; as well as cadets from Royal Military College and many uniformed men and women from the three branches of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Toronto Branch thanks the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada and The Ukrainian Canadian Veterans’ Fund for their participation and support of this event.
