Apr 23, 2015 | Newpathway, Featured, Arts & Culture

Daria Diakowsky, Toronto.

I’m stating, at the outset, that the art work on that poster immediately charmed me. I have been working as exhibit curator at the Ontario Branch of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada for quite a number of years and have had the privilege of closely examining many unique costumes from most of Ukraine’s ethnographic regions. Thе depiction of the young harvester in the piece titled “Harvest Time” felt authentic, felt right. The work is alive with colour, but, like the best examples in our costume collection, judiciously selected.

Distortion adds interest and motion to this composition. The face, the eyes, the hands, the halo bring to mind some of my favourite icons. The piece somehow provided the antidote to this year’s relentless winter. It also gave me the courage to accept this challenge.

Іt is a testament to his determination to become an artist that shortly after arriving in Canada in 1969 he enrolled in George Brown College where he earned his Commercial Artist Diploma. Taking on all manner of work to sustain his family he, nevertheless, persued his goal to complete his studies and earned his degree from the Ontario College of Art. He has traveled extensively to further research his work visiting Munich, Amsterdam, Bruge, Antwerp, Krakow, Prague and Philadelphia. He has held almost 30 personal exhibits and taken part in over 75 group exhibitions. Now there are close to 1,000 works of his art in the hands of private collectors, institutions and museums in Canada, The United States, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine.

I will end on a little more serious note. I was struck by a remark Sviatoslav Vakarchuk made recently in an interview with Marko Stech. (Vakarchuk is the leader of the musical group Okean El’zy that visited Canada.) He said, and I translate, “Ukrainians need to view Ukraine not as the land of their parents but as the land of their children”. I agree with him. But my work at the museum, and earlier as a teacher, made it very clear to me that if Ukrainians want a future they need to know their past. Ethnography is but one of the disciplines that is riddled with “білі плями”, areas needing study. Yesterday historical circumstances often discouraged, even forbad, such research.

Today progress has and is being made and we have all benеfited. And though Ukraine’s tomorrow is somewhat uncertain there is so much hope. May succeeding generations make decisions based on knowledge and not ignorance and misinformation when forming their future. It is the latter, I assume, that is the burden of the past, “тягар минулого” Vakarchuk was referring to in his interview. For the former can provide inspiration to many and become the wind beneath their wings. And we have Pavlo Lopata’s exhibit to prove it.
